New Yorker Heads South To Play College Ball

Reporter Brian Towey has a story on Lamar Pittman's decision ...

Lamar Pittman, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound power forward from Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., signed a letter of intent with with North Carolina Central, according to his coach, Pete Stefonowich.

"He's a strong, athletic four-man and he shoots the ball well," said Stefonowich. "He stretches defenses. He causes match-up problems. He's got more of a finesse game. He's got that intimidating build."

Pittman averaged 19.1 points and 11 rebounds for Dutchess, which plays in NJCAA Division III in the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference. He also considered St. Peter's.

"They like his athleticism and his ability to shoot the ball," said Stefonowich. "He's a good kid who has shown a lot of maturity. They just moved to Division I from Division II, and they're looking to bring in some kids to hold down the fort in terms of maturity."

Pittman, a 2005 graduate of Poughkeepsie High School, originally signed with Long Island University as a prep. He played for coach Brian Laffin at Poughkeepsie.

A former standout with the Albany City Rocks, Pittman participated in the 2004 Nike Camp in Indianapolis.
