Gary Charles: St. John's Leads For Omari

Reporter Mike Sullivan has the free story regarding the recruiting status of Omari Lawrence ...

Omari Lawrence, a 6-foot-4 swingman from South Kent in Connecticut, has a frontrunner, according to New York Panthers' program director Gary Charles.

"St. John's is the team to beat," said Charles.

The recruiting race isn't over, according to Charles. But head coach Norm Roberts of the Red Storm has done a tremendous job in forging an early advantage.

"He liked his visit to St. John's and enjoyed talking to Norm Roberts," said Charles.

Lawrence, a nifty lefty player who can score along the baseline, competed last season for St. Raymond's High School in the Bronx, N.Y.

"Miami, Virginia, Marquette, Connecticut, Louisville are some of the schools I know are interested in him," said Charles.

Pittsburgh has been previously reported too to have interest in the Bronx scoring guard.

Lawrence will not play this summer for the Panthers. He injured his shoulder and is likely to miss the July evaluation period, according to Charles.
