HIGH SCHOOL HEAD COACH: Jack Curran
AAU TEAM: New York City Gauchos
POSITIONS: Point Guard/Shooting Guard
UPDATE: Russell Smith said he is excited about his approaching year at Archbishop Molloy in Briarwood, N.Y. Smith will then take a prep year at South Kent in Connecticut for a few reasons.
Smith is a player with raw talent, the ability to speed by defenders. He has the athletic ability to be a high division one basketball player.
But this will take time as he continues to make progress in his individual games. Like most players still trying to learn the point guard position, there are many decisions that need to be made during the course of a game.
Having two more seasons will only benefit Smith in this very important area of making the jump to the next step -- division one college basketball.
Down here in Florida, Smith has been competing with the 17 and under New York City Gauchos AAU team. He has shown nice range on his jumper.
As the decision making improves, Smith will land many high division one scholarships. For now, the next two years are a good chunk of time for Russell to gain more experience and understand the role of a point guard.
PREVIOUS EVALUATION OF RUSSELL SMITH'S INDIVIDUAL GAME: The Molloy guard knows one speed -- fast. He is able to sprint by defenders with his dribble and stagger a defender with some shake and bake.
Russell has an exciting individual game and is more productive this season than ever before. As a starter, he is the most dangerous player on the court for Jack Curran's Stanners.
He has produced a better floor game now that he is given most of the minutes at the lead guard position for Molloy.
