Such is the case regarding the individual game of Aaron Gowans, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound guard from Bloomfield Tech in Bloomfield, New Jersey.
Gowans played for Matt Paul's NJABC AAU program during the summer and demonstrated he is a factor on the defensive side. He's also athletic enough to play at the rim.
"Robert Morris and Iona are the front runners," said Paul. "He is built like a linebacker and is absolutely the best defender on the team."
And size doesn't matter to Gowans, according to Paul. "He can lock down little guys, big guys in the post, rebounds like a player bigger than him, and dunks the ball because of his great leaping ability," Paul stated.
Gowans is a junior this season, a member of the 2010 class. So there's time for him to polish his individual skills. Perhaps Gowans will get more looks down the road if he has a successful junior season in New Jersey.
Some of the areas that need improvement inclue ballhandling and a more consistent shot. Paul believes Gowans is a hard enough worker to progress in these two categories.
