Upstate Guard Should Have Big Junior Year

Reporter Mike Sullivan has a player profile update on upstate guard Jamel Fields, who is a junior this season ...

PLAYER PROFILE UPDATE: Jamel Fields

NICKNAME: Buddha

HEIGHT: 6-foot-1

WEIGHT: 170 Pounds

HIGH SCHOOL: Albany Academy in Albany, New York

POSITIONS: Shooting Guard/Point Guard

CLASS: 2010, A current senior

AAU TEAM: Albany City Rocks

AAU TEAM'S PROGRAM DIRECTOR: Jim Hart

COLLEGE INTERESTS: Fairfield, Albany, Siena, Monmouth, St. Francis, James Madison, St. Peter's

STRENGTHS IN JAMEL FIELDS' INDIVIDUAL GAME: Moving the ball to the rim against the bigger bodies inside the paint, allowing his forwards to free themselves for entry passes and easy baskets. Fields uses his ballhandling skills to beat his defender to the basket.

AREAS THAT NEED TO BE IMPROVED TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE PLAYER: We know that Fields can take the rock to the rim. However, his ability to move it closer to the basket would be easier if his perimeter game is polished.

More consistency in his perimeter shot will be a necessary step of progress to allow himself some ability to zip past defenders

EVALUATION: Has good zip on his step when he handles the ball and goes north to south. He doesn't mind playing a bit around the rim since he has strength in his frame too.
