Fordham Recruit Sparkles For Playaz Seniors

Reporter Mike Sullivan was at IS8 yesterday to watch some playoff basketball ... he saw Chris Gaston be a factor near the rim for the Playaz Seniors ...

Chris Gaston, an agile 6-foot-7 big man from the Playaz Club of New Jersey, scored 24 points in helping his team squeak out an 84-79 victory over the Unique All Stars in a quarterfinal game held at IS8 yesterday morning.

Gaston, who is now attending The New Hampton School in New Hampshire, has already given a commitment to Fordham, a terrific get for the Bronx-based university.

The Playaz led 19-18 after the first eight minutes of play and extended their advantage to 36-30 heading into the third quarter. The Playaz pushed the lead to 58-49 as the fourth quarter began.

However, the Unique All Stars erased a double-digit deficit late in the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie the game.

But Gaston's inside presence was too powerful for the interior of the Unique All Star defense to handle.

"We had our chances," said Unique All Star head coach Torrel Harris. "The kids played very hard. We had our chances at the end. We just couldn't get it done."

The Unique All Stars were done in by a very talented Playaz team that included Brian Oliver, Tamir Jackson, Dominic Cheek, and Lance Brown.

Tobias Harris scored 19 points while Russell Smith 23 points. The play of Jeronne Maymon was outstanding too. Maymon scored 27 points.
