GARDEN CITY, NEW YORK -- P.J. Walters scored 18 points and Ahmad Reid came off the bench to provide much needed offensive punch to help St. Dominic High School defeat Cardozo High School, 57-44, in the Tom Crotty Memorial Classic held on the campus of Adelphi University.

The event is held annually to raise funds for the Hope Through Hoops charity.

St. Dominic's moved out to a 20-12 advantage after the first 16 minutes of play. Each team started out slow, especially Ron Naclerio's Cardozo team. Cardozo could only record three points in the first eight minutes of play.

However, Cardozo was able to get right back into the game midway through the second half by pounding the ball inside. Naclerio's team utilized the size and long arms of Ryan Rhoomes (12 points) and Dwayne Bronson (13 points). So as Cardozo was ready to move ahead for good, they forgot to get the ball inside again.

In addition, Walters banged down some long jumpers and Reid was terrific, hitting three clutch three-pointers to help St. Dominic regain the comfortable advantage in the final minutes of play.

Paul Bilbo, the center for St. Dominic, also had a solid game despite foul trouble. His size was important when he returned to help stop the big Cardozo run. Bilbo also had nine points but his value in this game went beyond the boxscore.

Reid finished the game with 18 points. The guard is just a sophomore so we're likely to see him more help Rob Pavinelli's St. Dom team the rest of the season.
