A College Coach's Dream -- Harold Spears

Reporter Mike Sullivan was fortunate enough last summer to take a peek into the athletic career of Harold Spears of the Pennington School in New Jersey. Spears is a two-sport star who is a terrific student too ...

College coaches have always looked for prospects that can perform on athletically as well as academically.

It's why prospects like Harold Spears, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound two-sport star from The Pennington School in Pennington, New Jersey, will always have scholarship offers on the table.

It was recently that his proud AAU head coach, Matt Pauls of NJABC, told us that the terrific student had also landed a basketball offer from Lafayette. But this only tells one part of this three-rung story on Spears.

Spears, who has excelled again this season as a basketball player in his junior year of competition, is also a terrific student.

1. Harold can play basketball on the division one level. The schools currently showing the most interest are Lafayette, Rider, Bucknell, LaSalle, Stony Brook, Princeton, Cornell, and Yale.

2. Spears is a high quality football recruit too, having been timed in the 40 in 4.6 seconds.

The colleges/universities that have kept track of his football progress the most are Connecticut, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Maryland, and Boston College.

3. Harold is an excellent student. He has a 3.9 grade point average and, if he wanted, could take a shot at landing an academic scholarship too.

One college coach remarked, a student/athlete like Spears "is hard to find. So when you do find someone like him, you recruit him and follow his progress."
