Senior Guides Iona Prep To Glens Falls, NY

Reporter Brian Towey was at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York to watch Iona Prep battle St. John The Baptist High School in a CHSAA "A" state final ...

As his senior year closes, Andre Pope is delivering.

Pope, a 5-foot-10, 156-pound shooting guard/point guard from Iona (N.Y.) Prep scored 18 points with four 3-pointers in an 82-57 win over St. John the Baptist in the CHSAA 'A' state final at Fordham University on Saturday. Iona advances to Glens Falls to play the Public Schools 'A' champion on March 27.

The shots Pope made were timely, his defense clutch.

"When he's shooting the ball like he was (Saturday), he brings our team to another level," said Iona Prep coach Vic Quirolo, "He played great 'D', drew charges. Offensively, he made big shots."

"I'm a shooter," said Pope. "And (Quirolo) wants me to play hustle defense, get loose balls, get rebounds. I'm a high-riser, so I go to the rim and rebound."

Pope's recruitment, on hold until the season ends, is very much open.

"I'm not really sure who is recruiting me," said Pope. "(Quirolo) said that Hartford is really interested, and I think NJIT is looking."

"NJIT is about a centimeter away from offering (Pope)," said Quirolo.
