Iona Prep Guard Has Some Solid D-1 Interest

Reporter Brian Towey has an update on the individual game of Sandro Carissimo. He also gives a progress report on Sandro's recruiting process and what the solid prospect plans on doing this spring and summer ...

On a balanced Iona Prep team, Sandro Carissimo's role is well-defined: he is the guy who can flat-out fill it up.

"I'm a scorer," said Carissimo, a junior shooting guard. "And then play defense, too. But my thing is scoring."

"He's the guy that scores the points for us," said Iona Prep coach Vic Quirolo. "Offensively, he's our number one guy."

A natural point-producer with a deft perimeter touch, Carissimo has been trying to diversify his game to keep defenses off balance.

"I've been trying to go to the basket a lot more," said Carissimo. "In the summer I've been more of a shooter. (But) People have been coming out on me, so I pump fake, go by them, and get to the basket."

In the early going, Carissimo is receiving heavy interest from the academic leagues, among others.

"Penn State has been sending me a lot of things," said Carissimo. "Other than that, it's a lot of the same schools I'd been hearing from, with Bucknell and others. Central Florida has been calling a lot. Pretty much every school in the Patriot League and Ivy League has contacted me."

Carissimo previously mentioned Davidson, Brown, Albany, Holy Cross, and Harvard, and said that those schools remain in contact.

Carissimo will run with the New York Gauchos this spring and summer.
