Gauchos Prospect Has Big AAU Season Ahead

Reporter Mike Sullivan discusses the individual game of Rice High School junior forward Shane Southwell, who also competes for one of the country's top AAU programs ...

Shane Southwell, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound small forward out of Rice High School in New York, N.Y., is a player to watch over the next few months as the spring and summer AAU seasons come upon us.

Southwell has been a player who is opening division one coaches' eyes due to his play over the second half of the season. As previously reported by Brian Towey on this website, Southwell transferred to Rice from All Hallows High School.

Southwell adjusted quite well after becoming eligible in January due to the transfer of a player within the New York City Catholic League.

BRIAN TOWEY'S PREVIOUS EVALUATION:

A long, slender wing, the ambidextrous Southwell has point forward-type skills, with excellent vision and playmaking ability. Southwell is able to survey the floor and find open mates or slash to the basket.

COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES OF INTEREST:

St. John's, Providence, Marquette, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Seton Hall, Miami, West Virginia.

SOUTHWELL ON HIS INDIVIDUAL GAME:

My game has changed. I put on a couple of pounds. I think I gained some strength. My jump shot has gotten better. My defense has gotten way better.. My whole game has gotten better."

Southwell will compete with the New York City Gauchos this spring and summer.
