Former Cardozo Star Adjusting Well Upstate

Reporter Mike Sullivan has an update on former Cardozo High School basketball star James Southerland, who played for Ron Naclerio a couple of years ago ...

A consistent figure on the New York City high school basketball scene is longtime head coach Ron Naclerio of Cardozo High School in Bayside, Queens.

Sporting his usual orange colored Cardozo shirt, Naclerio walked around, chatted, and watched some solid AAU basketball played inside the new facility on the campus of St. John's University yesterday.

The Summer in the City event, sponsored by the New Heights and Team NJABC AAU programs, featured some of the best talent in the tri-state area.

Naclerio spoke to us about his former swingman, James Southerland, a skilled 6-foot-7 forward who played last year at Notre Dame Prep in Massachusetts. Southerland is currently enrolled at Syracuse, a place he focused on for the past two seasons after his commitment.

"He's so happy to be there," Naclerio said. "It's a great situation for him. He wanted it so much and he's doing well."

Naclerio has always been positive about Southerland's skill level. "He's big and he can shoot it," he said. "There aren't many players like that out there."

Naclerio stated that James has already gotten a head start academically. "He's doing well," he said. "He got a B plus in the first course. He's very happy about that. He's working hard up there."

WHAT RON NACLERIO SAID PREVIOUSLY ABOUT JAMES SOUTHERLAND'S GAME:

"James can improve his ballhandling. Use both hands more on his drives to the basket. Mix it up more, give the defender something to think about on what his next move will be. Keep the defender flat-footed more."
