East Coast Guard Completes Summer Success

Joey Gripper, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound point guard from Abington Friends High School in Jenkintown, Penn., dropped in 19 points and added 11 assists to help his team, The Brotherhood, claim the 17 and under championship in the Mill Creek Summer League.

Gripper, who recently secured a scholarship offer from St. Bonaventure, according to his family, has had a very impressive summer.

Previously, we reported that Joey helped Team Phenom advance to the Final Four in the NIKE Chosen League, only to lose to a team sponsored by NBA player Thaddeus Young in the semifinals.

He had a solid July evaluation period, showing he is quite capable of playing division one basketball. Previously, there was interest from Northeastern and Davidson as the summer began.

Here are some highlights of Joey's summer:


Gripper, who made the all tournament team, tallied 15 assists in a semifinal playoff game game at the event and also scored 14 points and had 11 assists in the team's championship victory. Team Phenom defeated the New York Panthers, 68-57.

*Joey made the all tournament team at the Southern Invitational in Charlottesville, Virginia.


Drexel has also offered a scholarship while La Salle and St. Joe's have shown interest.
