Shane is a winner, a hard nosed athlete who helps his team win a game in many ways. "I want to improve my overall aggressiveness too," he said.
Shane, who previously had transferred from All Hallows High School in the Bronx to Rice High School in Manhattan, was a big part of helping the Raiders claim a title last season. He became eligible in January of 2009 for Rice.
BRIAN TOWEY'S PREVIOUS EVALUATION:
A long, slender wing, the ambidextrous Southwell has point forward-type skills, with excellent vision and playmaking ability. Southwell is able to survey the floor and find open mates or slash to the basket.
COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES OF INTEREST:
Southwell has committed to Kansas State. "What I liked best was the fact they want me two come in and play a combo guard role," he said. "I was comfortable with the coaching staff and players too."
He previously had recruiting interest from St. John's, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Marquette, West Virginia, South Florida, Providence, South Carolina, Seton Hall, and Miami of Florida.
SOUTHWELL ON HIS INDIVIDUAL GAME:
My game has changed. I put on a couple of pounds. I think I gained some strength. My jump shot has gotten better. My defense has gotten way better.. My whole game has gotten better."
Southwell will compete with the New York City Gauchos this summer.
