Community Captain: Cameron Harris

CHARLOTTE, NC --- The Carolina Panthers Community Captain program recognizes outstanding high school football student-athletes in North and South Carolina who have demonstrated strong leadership skills both on and off the field. The program encourages these outstanding young men to continue to be leaders and role models in their communities.

The Carolina Panthers have selected Michael "Cameron" Harris, Quarterback at Kings Mountain High School, as a 2010 Community Captain.

With all of the demands and distractions of the high school environment, it takes character, maturity, and work ethic to be set apart as an individual, as an athlete, and as a leader. On the field, Harris is not only the Captain and Quarterback of the Kings Mountain HS Football team, but he has been recognized in both football and track and field on the regional and state level. In his junior year, Harris was awarded the Marine Corps "Distinguished Athlete" award, as well as being the Big South Conference leading passer in all three categories (completions, yardage, and touchdowns). On the track, Harris has gained All-Conference and All-Region honors, and participated the North Carolina Track and Field State Championships.

However, being a star athlete is not the only thing on Harris' mind. Ranked #2 in his class in his senior year with an unweighted GPA of 4.0, Harris has been recognized as a NCHSAA Scholar Athlete on three occasions as well as being nominated for the Commended National Merit Scholar honors. Despite an ever-growing list of honors and distinctions, Harris is humbled by the work he does in the community. In a summer working as a camp counselor at Harvest Works, Harris got the opportunity to work with developmentally disabled and special needs children, teaching them how to swim, play basketball, and board games. In the words of his School Counselor, Jill Cruise, Harris "valued his time at Harvest Works, and will forever be changed by the kid's determined spirits". Harris also volunteers to coach basketball through his local church using the game of basketball to reach out to 5th and 6th grade boys and spread the message of his Faith.

In his senior year, Harris is again recognized throughout the state as the Big South Conference's leading passing across all three categories, but looks to lead by example and impart work ethic, humility, and character on his teammates and his community.

The Carolina Panthers will recognize the 2010 Community Captain Award recipients during a special on-field ceremony during pre-game of our final home game on December 19th.
