At 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, Askew actually played with his hand on the ground as a defensive end of Mallard Creek, earning all-conference honors as a junior. But, with 4.65 speed in the forty yard dash, he projects as a linebacker at the next level. He finished the season with 11 sacks and more than 70 tackles.
During the season Askew visited both Georgia Tech and Duke unofficially. The trip to Duke came during the game against North Carolina, and the atmosphere left an impression on the Charlotte area prospect.
"The atmosphere in the stadium was very surprising, and I really didn't' expect it to be as electric as it was. It was my first time at Duke, and overall I think the visit was a great experience and I would love to return. After seeing everything, I believe the program is headed in a great direction after earning some big wins this year."
As with most players, the first recruiting pitch made by Duke has centered around the academic opportunities in Durham.
"My position coach, Matt Lubick, has made that a big priority for sure. He also talks about the great coaching staff and exactly what it means to have a degree from a school like Duke."
