Regional Notebook

Notebook entries from NCHSAA Regional Semifinals Day 1: Raleigh Millbrook vs. Fayetteville Westover and Greenville Rose vs. New Hanover.

Early lead gives Millbrook win

Raleigh Millbrook (21-9) just couldn't compensate for the early first quarter lead they spotted Fayetteville Westover (28-1) in the 4A Eastern Regional Semifinals Tuesday night. After that awful first quarter that ended with a 23-12 Westover lead, the Wildcats played the Wolverines tight in each of the following quarters, but still lost 74-64.

The game was fast paced powered by two offenses based around three guards. Westover's starting trio – DeShaune Griffin, Steve Burch, and Kevin Williams – accounted for 36 of the Wolverines' points, while Millbrook's starting guards – Pierre Evans, Mitchell Jefferies, and Xavieran McCall – managed to squeak out 27 points, but received bench help from guard Bryant Lewis, who added another 10 points.

Westover forward Eric Maynor, who just missed a double-double, truly stole the show with 20 points and nine rebounds.

New Hanover wins season series

After splitting the home-at-home during the season with the away team claiming both victories, Tuesday night's 4A Eastern Regional Semifinal turned into the tie breaker between two very solid teams: Greenville Rose (24-3) and New Hanover (26-3).

The match-up lived up to the hype going right down to the wire with the game requiring an extra quarter before determining the winner.

New Hanover lived off balance play as four of their five starters ended the game with double digits in points. Rose, on the other hand, leaned on Raheem Smith, who posted 26 points and four assists.

The Wildcats method of balance team play eventually won in the end when New Hanover out scored Rose 18-10 in the overtime period.
