Elite 8 Combine Exclusive Results

The rain held off just enough to allow some of North Carolina's top players to shine in Snow Hill Saturday during NC Prep Report's Second Annual Elite 8 Combine. Southwest Onslow's Dekota Marshall lit the track on fire with two sub-4.3 forty-yard dash times. On the bench press, Ben Sprouse of East Rutherford, Spencer Hamton of Greenville Conley, and Mario Brown of Greene Central each rep'd 185 pounds 27 times.

0-139

First: Joe Dixon (Hunt)
Second: Parris Lee (Savannah MS)
Third: James Campbell (North Johnston)

Joe Dixon dominated a five horse race  by claiming first place in every activity with the exception of the 20-yard pro shuttle. Parris Lee, one of two middle schoolers in attendance, claimed first in the shuttle run with a 4.11-second time.

140-154

First: Mike Warren (Southern Wayne)
Second: DeMarco Becton (Greene Central)
Third: Latrone Robbins (Holmes)

Mike Warren also claimed three first place finishes out of the four activities with the forty-yard dash being the lone event eluding Warren of a first place finish. Second and third place turned into a tight battle in which DeMarco Becton and Latrone Robbins edged Wilson Hunt's Jeff Lynn for trophy finishes.

155-169

First: James Pone (Hunt)
Second: Tyrone Arrington (SW Onslow)
Third: Harrison Walston (Greene Central)

In one of the more competitive weight classes, James Pone barely edged Tyrone Arrington for the crown. Not one participant claimed a first place finish in more than one event (Pone won bench press, Arrington won forty, Cameron Shelton of Greene Central won shuttle, and Evan Sibustian of Hunt won vertical jump).

170-184

First: Dekota Marshall (SW Onslow)
Second: Cortez Gilbert (Aycock)
Third: Dequaris Bush (SW Edgecombe)

In the largest weight class, Dekota Marshall dominated with three first place finishes and one second place finish. Marshall posted a blazing 4.33 forty time and a 31-inch vertical. Although he never posed a threat to Marshall, Cortez Gilbert easily claimed second by recording a first, second, and third place finish.

185-199

First: Linnell Evans (Holmes)
Second: Derek Grasty (Tarboro)
Third: Spencer Hamton (Conley)

A day high 32-inch vertical helped Linnell Evans claim the crown in this weight class. However, the real drama came after the conclusion of all the events when a bench off was needed to determine third place. Anthony Williams of Jacksonville was tied for third place until Spencer Hamton out benched him with 26 reps.

200-214

First: Mario Brown (Greene Central)
Second: J.T. Glass (Tarboro)
Third: Travis Brooke (Northern Nash)

In another close battle for first place, Mario Brown's first place finishes in the forty-yard dash and the bench press helped beat out J.T. Glass for the weight class's crown. Devin Simpson of Northwest Guilford fell short of a trophy.

215-229

First: Kori Cumberland (SW Onslow)
Second: Michael Lunsford (Greene Central)
Third: Joseph Davis (Southern Wayne)

A double "overtime" bench off was needed to determine third place in this weight class, while Kori Cumberland and Michael Lunsford easily claimed first and second place respectively. After trading equal repetitions, Joseph Davis out rep'd Quinton Stackhouse of Wilson Hunt.

230- up

First: Ben Sprouse (East Rutherford)
Second: Brian Daniels (Conley)
Third: Dustin Stocks (Conley)

The long drive from Forest City was certainly worth if for Ben Sprouse, who won the "heavy-weight" division. Yet another bench off was required to name third place in this class with Dustin Stocks out benching Javon Skinner of Edenton Holmes.
