Shrine Bowl Combines Begin Saturday

This Saturday signifies the unofficial beginning to the 2005 football season with the kickoff of the first Shrine Bowl Combine of the year – Greene Central High School in Snow Hill. The event figures to draw some of Eastern North Carolina's top players – which appears to be the top region in the state for recruiting talent.

Registration for Saturday's combine begins at 10:30 a.m. for kickers, punters, and long snappers and 11:00 a.m. for position players. Special teamers begin drills at 11:00 a.m., while position players get going at 12:30 p.m.

Position players will have their height and weight measured and will be tested in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, vertical jump, and bench press (repetitions of 185 pounds). They will also participate in position specific drills for evaluation purposes.

Participates receive the opportunity to earn a Shrine Bowl roster spot and impress collegiate coaching staffs in attendance.

Potential attendees include division I-A recruits Deunta Williams of Jacksonville White Oak, Kendric Burney of Southwest Onslow, Bobby Hatchell of Jacksonville, and Owen Spencer of North Brunswick.

The Shrine Bowl Combine tour will continue the following Saturday in Rockingham (Richmond Senior High School). It will resume on consecutive Saturdays with trips to Asheville (A.C. Reynolds HS), Charlotte (Butler HS), and Jamestown (Ragsdale HS). A special invitation only practice will be held at Carolina Panthers Stadium in Charlotte after the conclusion of all the combines.

The combine is open to any rising sophomore, junior or senior at the cost of $15.00. Shrine Bowl Combine Coordinator Jim Bob Bryant can be contacted at 252-717-8681 for any questions.
