Smouse hired at Athens Drive

Raleigh Athens Drive has once again found a successor for Ron Wheeler, who vacated the head football coach position after the 2004 season.

Former Lumberton coach Jeff Smouse was named the head coach of the Jaguars according to the Raleigh News & Observer Friday (link).

Wheeler was originally replaced by Cary Godette, until Godette left for an assistant coach position on the Rutgers football staff.

After going 9-4 during the 2002 season, Smouse went 0-22 the past two years. However, Athens Drive's brain trust feel Smouse's pass first offense will breathe new life into a program that went 1-9 last season.

Smouse will be the fourth head coach at Athens in the past five years.
