Blast from the Past

For his first scholarship offer, Tavares Brown of Rockingham (N.C.) Richmond received a little help from his past. Brown, who grew up in Maryland, was tendered last week by the Terrapins.

"Coach [Ed Emory] called me down to his office and said that Maryland offered me and Norman [Whitley]," said Brown. "They are supposed to send the written offers in the mail soon."

Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and Michigan have begun to pick up their recruiting efforts and seem on the verge of following Maryland with an offer.

Brown's track and wrestling schedule has prevented him from making any sort of unofficial visits, but he hopes to take trips to both Tennessee and Virginia in the upcoming months.

Although Brown denies a leader, he admits one school holds a special spot.

"Tennessee has always been in my heart," said Brown. "But really I want to stay close to home. If I don't stay close to home I want to go really far away."

Despite recording 80 tackles and eight sacks last season at defensive end, schools are looking at Brown for defensive tackle. To accommodate, the Richmond Senior coaching staff are beefing up the 6-foot-2, 250-pounder up and moving him to tackle this season.
