A True Sleeper

Even if you are a diehard fan of high school football in North Carolina the name James Smoot isn't recognizable. Smoot, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound tailback from Concord (N.C.) Central Cabarrus, only played two games last season due to injury and recently transferred in from Concord (N.C.) Robinson.

Despite the obstacles, quite a few ACC coaching staffs have Smoot very much on their recruiting radar waiting for senior film before extending a scholarship offer.

"No offers yet," said Smoot. "I'm talking to Virginia Tech a lot right now, and Clemson."

Apparently the Hokies' efforts are having a good effect on Smoot as he list Virginia Tech as his early leader, despite the lack of a tender.

"Virginia Tech, I really like," said Smoot. "I like their program. I just like Coach [Frank] Beamer – he's a good coach. I haven't been up there yet, but I'll be going up there on July 9th."

Smoot's trip to Virginia Tech on July 9th is for the Hokies' individual camp, where he hopes to earn his first offer.

In his limited action, Smoot ran in three touchdowns and rushed for almost 300 yards. Central Cabarrus head coach Glen Cook figures to use Smoot plenty this season as a feature back.
