Sykes Receives Surprise Offer from Maryland

Verbally committed to Virginia Tech, Jacob Sykes thought his recruitment was over. However, Sykes received a pleasant surprise in the mail Wednesday afternoon.

"I received a scholarship in the mail from Maryland," said Sykes. "At first, I thought it was just a newsletter that they send in the mail. I didn't open it, my mom opened it."

Sykes, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound wide receiver from Goldsboro (N.C.), committed to the Hokies during their final one-day camp, but will have to grey shirt and enroll in the 2007 spring semester.

The new scholarship doesn't really change Sykes's situation with Virginia Tech, but he has recently decided to take official visits to other schools.

"It doesn't really change anything," said Sykes. "But, I am going to visit other schools to keep my options opened just in case God have something better in mind for me. But I also wanted to make it clear that I am strongly committed to Virginia Tech, but I am still going through my recruiting process."

In addition to Maryland and Virginia Tech, East Carolina, who has also offered Sykes, will also be under strong consideration for an official visit.

In 2004, Sykes was one of the few bright spots on a 1-win team catching 23 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns.
