It's Now a Game of Respect

Tonight's match-up between the Belmont South Point Red Raiders and the Shelby Crest Chargers was the Pre-season Game of the Year for the highly challenging Big South 4A/3A. This was anticipated to be the battle for the conference title. But, this will be a game of bragging rights and better playoff seeding. Crest and South Point each have a streak of conference titles. South Point has won six consecutive conference titles dating back to 1999. Crest has won five straight since 2000.

But for the first time since those dates neither one of these teams are going to walk away with the title. The Ashbrook Green Wave has it wrapped up already with a conference record of 5-0 after finishing last in non-conference play at 1-4. Whether they win or lose, it's theirs outright.

South Point's QB/DB Tyler Lemons, WB/S Cameron McGlenn and FB/LB Jordan Gilmore have both been huge assets on both sides of the ball. Lemons's biggest game undoubtedly came against Kings Mountain. He accounted for all of the Red Raiders' scores whether it was running or passing in a 41-14 trumping of the Mountaineers.

Crest will be led on offense by QB Jordan Robinson, RBs Donald Clark, Brandon Carter and they have Tosh Toms back after missing three games. LB Brandon Spikes, a U.S. Army All-American Pro-Bowl Select, returned to the line-up against East Gaston as did DL Brandon "Tiny" Peterson after missing four consecutive games due to injuries. Their presences were definitely missed in those games as the Chargers were 2-2 in those games. The Chargers' best game came against Forestview when they held Forestview's offense scoreless while scoring a whopping 37 points. Tosh Toms accounted for all but one of Crest's touchdowns and Spikes caught a two-point conversion pass to assist on the scoring.

South Point is hoping to avoid dropping another conference game after losing a 17-16 heartbreaker to North Gaston. Crest, after winning two straight 3AA State Titles, has yet to win two straight games. The Chargers hope to get that streak going into the playoffs. They are coming off a 21-14 victory over East Gaston,

The game is set to take place at South Point at 7:30.
