"I did a lot of praying and made a decision with my family, and we decided that this is where God wants us," said Thiel. "I am excited about the opportunity at Northside and look forward to working with the administration, faculty, coaches, and students to generate a new level of excitement for athletics."
During his 16 years at USF, Thiel proved to be a tremendous recruiter and evaluator of talent. He directly coached two Olympians in hurdles and the 110 meters. Both athletes competed in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and one of the athletes also participated in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Thiel has also coached 17 All-Americans and 60 conference champions. His 2003 women's outdoor track and field team won the team's first-ever Conference USA Championship. For his efforts, Thiel was named the Conference USA Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year.
Headmaster David Kilgore said, "We took our time in recruiting for this position. The patience paid off with the hiring of Thiel. We have not only hired someone who is considered to be one of the top coaches in America, but we have acquired someone with experience, contacts, and leadership ability to take our athletic program to the next level." Kilgore noted that Thiel's supervision of the cross country/track and field program at USF involved more organization, supervision, and planning than the entire athletic program at Northside. Kilgore added, "We are excited and look forward to the impact Greg Thiel will have in our school and in the community. His enthusiasm and passion are contagious."
Northside will introduce Thiel to the public on Saturday, May 12, 5:00 p.m. with a reception to be held in the school's Fine Arts Center. Thiel will share information about his transition from a Division I athletic program to the Director of Athletics at a private, Christian school. In addition, Thiel will introduce some of his immediate plans for athletics at Northside. The invitation to meet Greg Thiel is open to school families, students, faculty, staff, alumni, booster club members, area athletic directors, and local media members.
