When Springfield South and Wayne take the field, anything can happen. In past years there have been overtime games, multi overtime games, high scoring and anything else you can throw in to make this one of the top games in the old WOL and now in the GWOC. What will be in store in 2003? Lets take a look.
THE WILDCATS OFFENSE
The 2003 Wildcat offense is not much different than what people saw in 2002. Except with the play of new quarterback Brennen Glass (82 Att - 44 Comp 585 yards 6 TD's 4 INT) and running backs Nate Miller (44 carries - 203 yards - 2 TD) and Jerome Peterson ( 1game 17 carriers - 90 yards) that's making a name for himself in only his freshman year. In watching Peterson the Warriors will see a back with many moves just learning to play the game. Miller is also a good pass catcher (14 Rec - 176 yards - 2 TD) along with Jabril Thomas (15 Rec - 212 yards - 1 TD) As a team South has put up 286 rushing yards, 585 passing yards to average 290 yards per game. The Wayne defensive backfield and linebackers are going to be tested early and often. South is averaging 18 points per game and comes into the contest 0-3, looking to break the losing streak. South has fumbled 4 times losing 1 and seen 15 penalties for 115 yards in its first three games.
THE WARRIORS OFFENSE
Wayne will run the ball more than pass. In its first three games the Warriors have 456 rushing yards and 365 passing yards. They are just behind South in total offense with a 273 yards per game average. Junior Quarterback Matt Whited (56 ATT - 34 Comp - 365 Yards - 3 TD's - 2 Int) is showing improved play each week. He will have to keep putting up good numbers and not make mistakes for the Warriors to win. RB Thomas Mouser is showing no effects from the shoulder injury from early camp posting 251 total yards on 50 carries and 1 TD. Greg Orton is the go to receiver and is showing why he's getting recruiting interest as a junior. Greg has 13 receptions for 189 yards and 3 TD's. Marcus Freeman is starting to get a feel for running the ball and has 14 carries for 157 yards and 2 TD. The O-line must step up and have its best game for the Warriors offense to get on track. The Warriors have fumbled 6 times losing 3 and blocked 1 punt. They have seen 11 penalties for 76 yards called against them.
The Wildcats have given up 307 rushing yards and 631 passing yards in its first three games.
The Warriors have given up 534 rushing yards and 196 passing yards in its first three games of the season.
While South has some great athletes they trail Wayne in special teams play. With punter Marcus Freeman and punt returner Thomas Mouser the Warriors are one of the best. Add in the kicking game of Drew Eby and the Warriors have a advantage that may change the outcome of the game.
