Forget the record books when Wayne and Springfield South play. Over the years many battles have seen the two rivals fight, claw and see many games end very tight.

GAME SPONSOR

This years senior class had not beaten the Wildcats and Coach Minton challenged them for this game. Since a week one loss, the Warriors have seen steady improvement on both sides of the ball. Friday night saw them take another step towards a conference championship and a possible playoff berth.

With a steady stream of defense and the running of Thomas Mouser the Warriors bettered their record to 3-1 with a 45-12 victory of a young but talented team. (Keep an eye on this South team they should have a very good team in 2004)

The play of Marcus Freeman showed the effects getting recruiting out of the way will do. Freeman who looked relaxed and ready has told OPS that he will name the school he will play for on Sept. 24th at Wayne High School. His play started on South's first offensive play as Freeman broke the line and sacked South's QB and forced a fumble. This was just the start as Freeman and the Warrior defense shut down South's running game for the rest of the night. The passing game was another story. South who runs a spread offense and throws 9 out of 10 plays was able to pass the ball all night. The problem was the passing was all between the 20's and South was only able to score twice.

The Warrior offense showed its improved play as QB Matt Whited keeps getting better with each week. From the start of the game Matt was able to hit many open receivers with short step drops and quick passes. With this play the staff was able to get back-up QB Alex Earley some playing time in the first half and towards the end of the game. This will allow Earley to be ready in case of any injury to Whited during the season.

The star on offense was Thomas Mouser who showed why he's one of the best running backs in the GWOC. In scoring 4 touchdowns Mouser piled up many rushing and receiving yards on the night. The Wildcats had no answer for him and with big plays by Billy Viers and other Warriors the offense had its best night of the season.

WAYNE ATHLETIC BOOSTERS

Wayne's only problem was with stopping the passing game of South. The Warrior defense bent but didn't break. Each time South felt it had a chance to get back into the game the Warriors found a way to shut them down and forced South into many turnovers ranging from fumbles and interceptions.

The Wildcats now stand at 0-4 and still have Sidney, Fairmont, Centerville and Xenia along with its big rival North as games they will have big test in. The Warriors will head home for Week 5 with a 3-1 record and have big games with Xenia, Piqua and Centerville and with improved teams Springfield North and Kettering Fairmont to look forward towards. Next week the Warriors will play host to Beavercreek and you can hear it live only on OhioPrepScene.com
