Bruce Hampton has followed the Firebirds during the season for In this report he tells us about last weeks game.

A small flicker of light still burns on the playoff hopes of the Firebirds as they "blew out" Cleveland Central Catholic 63-0 on Friday night bringing them to 4-4 on the season.

The game was a mismatch from the beginning as Central Catholic fumbled away the opening kickoff.  This led to a quick score by the Firebirds and the rout was on.

The "Birds" ground game resembled a full assault on a unprotected beachhead as all six of the running backs got into the scoring frenzy led by tailback Clarence Scott with two 1st half scores..  Quarterback Doug Alford joined his backfield mates with a first quarter score of his own.

By the start of the second half all the starters had been pulled out of the game. The receivers had some good grabs too, particular Anton Veasley who appears to be improving as the season progresses. However, there were several passes thrown that could have been caught had the receiver just reached out for the reception, but little effort was made to do so.  If the Firebirds expect to make the playoffs then all parties, particularly the receivers, are going to have to crank it up a notch and show more effort to to "go after" passes.

This week's game against Padua will be a good opportunity for the passing game to improve. In order for the Firebirds to get into the playoffs they first have to win out and then hope for some missteps from the teams in front of them.  The fight for the last couple of playoff spots is going to be very close.
