As I tell many people, I'm not a guru, or any kind of an expert. I just love to cover Ohio High School sports. In doing so I felt if you were going to make your picks known, I would make my picks known. Don't be hard on me now!

I wish we had the time to breakdown each and every game in the first round of the 2003 OHSAA Football Tournament, but instead we will look at the game I would pay to watch, along with giving you my un guru picks on who I thing will advance and who may surprise.

Region 1

GAME TO PAY AND SEE: 9 - 1 Cleveland Glenville takes on 8 - 2 Cleveland St. Ignatius, this will be a great test for Glenville. With the addition of O'Neal, Glenville has some of the best talent on the field. Ignatius is coming off of two losses and I'm sure the experience coaching staff will use that to prepare them for this big game. The seeding in this game don't mean a thing. As much as everyone likes Ignatius, look for Glenville to hang tough and take this one to the final gun. As much as I would like to pick Glenville, I have to pick Ignatius in a close game. But I wouldn't be surprised if Glenville won.

I have picked Harding to win the DI Title since the summer. Nothing has changed my mind, but the loss of Ferguson is a big one. While he's not had the type of year many expected, he's still one of the best backs in the state. This pick could be the first to go south, its hard getting back to a title game back-to-back.

Dave's pick to advance: Warren G. Harding

Dave's surprise team to advance: Glenville

Region 2

Games in Region 2 will be close, but I don't expect any of the teams from this region to play for a state title. Looking at each of them you will see weakness. I look for the winner of the Whitmer, St. John's Jesuit game to advance.

Dave's pick to advance: Toledo St. John's Jesuit

Dave's surprise team to advance: St. Francis De Sales

Region 3

As I have stated, my pick of Harding has been there since summer. But the one school that is catching my eye and playing great football comes from this region. Westerville South is playing great football on both sides of the ball. The Wildcats have only given up 65 total points on the season, this includes 5 shutouts and three games of giving up one score. While this region doesn't have the big name schools of Region 1 or Region 4, they have some teams that will battle and could surprise someone at the State Semifinals. The other teams to keep an eye on are Dublin Coffman and Lancaster. Coffman's two losses were by a total of 5 points, and the Golden Gales lost to playoff team Grove City.

Dave's pick to advance: Westerville South

Dave's surprise team to advance: Dublin Coffman

Region 4

While I would love to see the Wayne Warriors advance, my pick from the start of the season has been Colerain. With defending champion Elder playing great ball, anything can happen. The game to really watch is Moeller and Wayne. Moeller has been playing great football since a slow start. The Warriors lost the first game of the season and have been tested by Piqua, Xenia and Centerville on their way to a 9 - 1 record. The winner of this one could surprise some. I would also like to see the Elder - Anderson game. I love watching the running game of Elder and the spread of Anderson. But the one thing I really like watching is the play of Anderson's defensive backfield. If Anderson can stop the Panthers from running, they could pull the upset of the weekend.

Dave's pick to advance: Colerain

Dave's surprise team to advance: ( TIE ) Cincinnati Anderson - Moeller

Well I'm not expert, and I'm not a guru. I just looked at the numbers and went with what I felt might be the top teams in the DI tournament. If you would like to give your picks, go to the OPS Football Message Board and post them. Give a winner and a surprise team when you do.
