Today I look at the Division II brackets and try and tell you who I think will advance or who may be the surprise teams in each Region. Remember I'm not a guru of any kind.
I would Pay To See This Game: 10 - 0 Trenton Edgewood, plays 6 - 4 Vandalia Butler. Will Edgewood get over the hump and advance past the first or second round of the playoffs this year? Will the path Butler took to get here help them advance? The reason I picked this game is simple, Butler has played teams that have won more games than Edgewood. I look at this due to the fact Butler made the playoffs with a 6 - 4 record. While Edgewood was able to beat another GWOC team in the first round ( Trotwood ) they may find Butler up to the challenge in this game. Look at the teams Edgewood and Butler have played.
MOUNT HEALTHY 8 - 2
ROSS 7 - 3
SPRINGBORO 5 - 5
MIAMISBURG 6 - 4
CARROLL 7 - 3
WEST CARROLLTON 4 - 6
LEMON - MONROE 0 - 10
BISHOP FENWICK 7 - 3
FRANKLIN 1 - 9
TALAWANDA 3 - 7
The one thing I see that makes Edgewood look good is they have posted 3 shutouts, and in 4 other games given up 7 points or less,
Butler played some of the top teams and the main thing that concerns me is the loss at Sidney in the final week. While Sidney had lots of things to play for in the last week, this makes Butler look weaker than I feel they really are. Lets look at who Butler played in 2003.
SPFLD. SOUTH 2 - 8
TECUMSEH 5 - 5
DUBLIN COFFMAN 8 - 2
GREENVILLE 2 - 8
PIQUA 5 - 5
NORTHMONT 9 - 1
TROY 3 - 7
XENIA 7 - 3
TROTWOOD-MADISON 6 - 4
SIDNEY 6 - 4
While my gut tells me to pick Butler, I have to go with Edgewood due to the defense they have shown.
Now lets look at Region 5 and the rest of the regional games. I feel that Warren Howland will beat Twinsburg. The Padua Franciscan - Copley game is a toss up, but I'm going with Copley on this one. Macedonia Nordonia played in last years final, and look ready to make another run in 2003. I will pick them over Olmsted Falls. Chardon will host Maple Heights, my pick is Chardon setting up a great game with Macedonia Nordonia.
Dave's pick to advance: Macedonia Nordonia Dave's surprise team to advance: Padua Franciscan
I see Sylvania Southview getting by Anthony Wayne, Defiance beating Grafton Midview. The Maumee - Tiffin Columbian game is a toss up, but having to pick one team I'll go with Maumee. Avon Lake will take on Ashland and look to head towards a title.
Dave's pick to advance: Avon Lake Dave's surprise pick to advance: Maumee
Some great match ups could come from here. But for these games to happen they have to win in the first round. I really like Brookhaven and I'm sure many others do also. I like the athletes Whitehall-Yearling have and will pick them over Chaney. I don't know much about either Pickerington or Louisville, so I will give the upper seed the pick and take Pickerington. Columbus Independence has the talent to go all the way, but Walnut Ridge could step in the way. I say this because I hate it when teams play in the final week of the season. You never know if they showed everything or held back looking at the fact they could play. I will take Independence and look towards a Brookhaven - Independence game down the road.
Dave's pick to advance: Brookhaven Dave's surprise team to advance: Whitehall-Yearling
While I have already picked Trenton - Vandalia Butler, the other games could have some surprises. Dayton Carroll may have got the home game, but I'll take Archbishop McNicholas in this one. Kings knows what to do in the playoffs, Wilmington has a great back in Jones but are just happy to make it into the field. Kings will roll in this one. Jackson and Mt. Healthy makes me look at who each has played and what I think of those teams. I will pick Jackson in this one, they are only 8 points from being 10 - 0.
Dave's pick to advance: Kings Mills Kings Dave's surprise team to advance: McNicholas
