2003 Gym Rats Shootout Results

Rob has the latest on what went on at the 2003 Gym Rat Shootout. The tournament hosted some of the best 5th and 6th graders in the Buckeye State.

The 2003 Gym Rat Shootout can best be described as ambitious. Why you ask? Eight teams playing three games each on one court in one day on a Tuesday in December. Now that's ambitious. This past week, the Columbus Basketball Club assembled seven of the state's top 6th grade travel teams, and arguably Ohio's top 5th grade team, for a one-day tournament. Included in the field were three teams that participated in AAU Nationals this past summer.

The tournament field consisted of the following teams: A.A.A. Basketball (Canton);Westwood Ballers (Dayton); Ohio Showstoppers (Akron); Moore Sports Tigers (Canton); Fineline (Zanesville); Dayton Airmen; Columbus Wolf Pack and Columbus Basketball Club. The tournament attracted not only the top teams, but drew a number of the top ranked 5th and 6th players in the state.

Top 5th grade players included: #1 Stevie Taylor-5'0 PG from Columbus; #2 Trey Burke- 4'11 PG from Columbus; #4 Javon Clark-5'0 PG from Canton; #7 Joe Lewis III-4'11 PG from Orange; #12 Kris Taylor-5'1 SG from Akron and #14 D.J. Bettinger-4'9 SG from Richfield.

The top 6th graders included: #2 Juwan Staten-5'0 PG from Dayton; #4 Storm Sanders-5'7 forward from Canton; #8 Deshaun Montgomery-5'7 center from Canton; #11 Jamon McClain-5'4 PG from Canton; #16 Daryl Wallace-5'5 forward from Dayton; #23 Isiah Elliott-4'10 PG from Canton and #25 Tavon Maclin-5-8 center from Dayton.

The tournament kicked off at 8:15 am and the championship game was completed at about 11:00 pm. Thought out the day-long marathon, Ohio's top 5th & 6th graders battled it out for respect and a chance at the championship. In the 1st semi-final game, A.A.A. Basketball defeated the Gym Rats on the strength of a late-game 16 point come back with less that four minutes left in the game. A.A.A. took their first lead with 4.6 seconds left in the game after a foul, and after converting 2 free throws. Although the Gym Rats got off a shot at the buzzer, it was well off the mark. The second semi-final game involved a blowout victory between the Westood Ballers over Moore Sports Tigers. The championship game featured a close battle early, but ended in a lopsided victory for A.A.A. Basketball.

The All-tournament team was selected from the two teams which reached the finals, and consisted of the following players: Juwan Staten; Daryl Wallace; Melvin Banks, Jr.; Deshaun Montgomery; Jamon McClain and Brice Wilder. The Columbus Basketball Club will be hold Gym Rat Shootout II on MLK Day. If its anything like the 1st tournament, pack a lunch, a sleeping bag, and football equipment.
