Ohio saw several quarterbacks make names for themselves during the 2003 recruiting season. 2004 looks to be no different with several more top signal callers looking for college scholarships. I caught up with one of those QB's today and got the low-down on the start of his recruiting process.
Tyler Horner from Clayton Northmont High School has put up some impressive numbers in the past couple of years for the T-Bolt's. Under the guidance of quarterback coaching legend Mike Schnider and Northmont Head Coach Lance Schnieder, Tyler has learned the past paced passing attack from two of Southwestern Ohio's best.
In talking with Mike and Lance they inform me that Tyler is one of the best they have coached. That he understands the game plan and run's the offense the way its meant to be ran. Both coaches told me about Tyler's highlight tape and sent me a copy. After looking at this tape, I came away with Tyler sitting as one of the top 3 quarterbacks in the state.
Tyler has great feet and can make all of the throws asked from the quarterback position. Short passes, long outs and hitting receivers in stride, filled the tape. He shows a great release and consistent release point. He delivers a strong pass and hits his target. The only area that I didn't see with Tyler was taking snaps from under center. This has to do with the type of offense Northmont runs, but Tyler was quick to say he works on that part of his game as much as he does the shot-gun snaps.
During our conversation, I asked Tyler about what schools have been sending letters of interest. Tyler has a very impressive list started with the following schools all showing early interest.
SCHOOLS SHOWING INTEREST IN TYLER
2. BOSTON COLLEGE
|5. KANSAS STATE|
|6. OHIO UNIVERSITY|
|7. MIAMI OF OHIO|
|11. WEST VIRGINIA|
During my conversation I asked Tyler what his plans were for the rest of the winter and during the spring and summer. Tyler told OPS, "I'm lifting and throwing at this time. Baseball will start soon and I'm also preparing for that. This summer I'm planning on getting to as many one day camps as I can. Last year I couldn't make all the camps I wanted and only attended Miami of Ohio, that will not be the case this summer."
I also asked Tyler about his academics and he told me, "I'm sitting with a 3.0 or higher right now. I just took the ACT last week so I don't have a score on it yet."
We also got the skinny on his personal stats:
|Tyler Horner||6'3||185||4.6 - 40|
|2003 STATS||REGULAR SEASON (10)|
So when your talking about quarterback prospects in Ohio this year, remember Tyler Horner will be one at the top of the list.
I would like to Thank Tyler for taking the time and sharing his football recruiting information with OhioPrepScene.com. Remember, just like Tyler, we need your highlight tape to see what you have to offer.
