OJ has the juice and by now everybody knows it, but Mayo's 44 point 10 rebound and 8 assist performance tonight at North College Hill can only be capsulated by OJ's own words: "It's MY city," exclaimed Mayo as he spurted a 9-0 run to open the second half.
Wyoming had tied the game at 32 at the half after falling behind by ten in the second quarter. The main Cowboy was of course, Kevin Weybright. NCH coach Jamie Mahaffey challenged his NCH team at halftime telling them that Weybright was the best player in the gym. Well, Mayo set out to show and prove that he was more than just hype, and he did just that.
COACH JAMIE MAHAFFEY OF NCH
Many thought that this Wyoming team had a chance to beat NCH (not me, ask Tom Groeschen of the Enquirer, I called it NCH by ten before the game) mainly because of the recent great play of Weybright. And while Weybright played well (scoring 26 points on the night), it was Mayo and his NCH teammates that played the best.
Wyoming star Kevin Weybright
Mayo sparked NCH and by the end of the third quarter it was NCH 63 Wyoming 41. Mayo had scored 20 of the 31 in the quarter and clearly showed that he, not Weybright, was the best player in the gym. With an assortment of dunks, jumpers, fade aways off the glass, dimes, and great defense (he must have had 6 or 7 steals), Mayo continued to lay claim as Cincinnati's best basketball player. "It is MY city," Mayo screamed bucket after bucket, often flexing his muscular arms.
OJ GETTING READY TO TAKE OVER
There was little Wyoming could do as OJ was flat out feeling it. But to show the type of player he is, he walked over to Coach Mahaffey as the fourth quarter played and asked for the assignment of Weybright. "I want Weybright", and Mahaffey obliged. Mayo's dazzling play overshadowed what could be considered the finest team play by NCH. They hit the boards, defended, executed offensively, and let the young man we call OJ do his thing. It is HIS city, yes it is!
