Top Seniors - Drique Johnson - JL Mann

Playing on both sides of the ball and helping the Patriots add to the win total, Drique Johnson has set high goals for JL Mann and himself for the 2003 season.

Last season the JL Mann Patriots took a huge step toward establishing a winning program and for 3 quarters they held region champ Greenville at bay leading 21-3 going into the 4th quarter. One of the top players leading the Patriots to a winning season was super athlete Drique Johnson.

"I didn't leave the field too often last season" states Johnson and when he says he never left the field, he really means it. The all region versatile player was all over the field and always on the field last season. Drique lined up as a Cornerback, Strong Safety, Wide Receiver, Punt Returner and Kick Returner.

Drique accounted for over 500 yards receiving and 5 touchdowns from his wide receiver spot in 2002. He also totaled 47 tackles and 2 interceptions while patrolling the defensive backfield for the Patriots.

During the spring season Drique continues to stay busy with the Patriot Track Team. This season he is competing in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 4X100 and 4X200 relay. Last week he was timed at 10.79 in the 100 meters at the Clemson Invitation Meet at Clemson University. In his spare time, he is also working heard in the JL Mann weight room.

"We want to take the next step and that means winning against teams like Greenville and Eastside" states Johnson. "We want to win the region, take the playoffs one game at a time and make it Columbia. 15-0 and a state title sounds good to me." The Senior Captain is ready to start the 2003 season with Fall 2-a-day practices and prepare for opening night. For a personal goal, Drique is hoping to perform well enough during the 2003 season to be chosen for one of the state All Star games.

After the season, Johnson will settle into the recruiting mode and look to make plans for his college career. He is currently hearing from Auburn, Colorado, South Carolina, Michigan, Virginia and Kentucky. "I think that I will look at one of the out of state schools for my college choice. Not too far away but it would be nice to get away from South Carolina and see another part of the country. I like Greenville but this is a chance to go somewhere else." states Johnson. This summer he will camp at Kentucky, South Carolina and has been invited to the Nike Camp in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Drique holds a solid 3.0 GPA and is waiting for his SAT score from the April 5th test. During his spare time, he is involved in many activities around the JL Mann campus, community and church. He is active in his church youth group and bible study and enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

Best of luck to Drique, Coach Cochran and the JL Mann Patriots during the 2003 season.
