The state of South Carolina has no shortage of running backs but one of the premier backs in the state for the 2012 class is D.J. Goodman of Greenwood High School. Already rated 3-stars by Scout.com South Regional Manager Chad Simmons, Goodman sat down with SCPrepNation.com recently to talk recruiting as he came back from a Junior Day visit with the Georgia Bulldogs.
"I visited Georgia for their Junior Day and I really liked it. All of the coaches are pretty cool and the campus atmosphere is really nice. The coaches were just saying that they've heard good things about me and that they like me a lot," Goodman said.
While in Georgia Goodman participated in the Chad Simmons MVP Showcase. He shared with us where he excelled and where he felt he could have improved.
"I participated in the Chad Simmons MVP Showcase. I think I did alright, I ran a 4.22 in the short shuttle, and had a 37 inch vertical. I was a little disappointed in my 40 time though."
Last season saw Goodman help his high powered Greenwood offense as they ran the Wing-T offense. He shared with us his junior season stats and talked about what his plans are for the offseason and goals heading into his senior season next year.
"I had 864 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on offense. I also had a kickoff return for a touchdown. On defense I had 31 tackles, 8 pass breakups, and an interception."
"This offseason I want to continue to train in the weight room by working on my explosion and getting my legs stronger so I can break more tackles, continue to get faster, and work on my endurance."
Goodman also talked about what the Eagles have returning next season as they look to have another big time season.
"We've got a lot of skill athletes coming back on the defensive side of the ball and some really good wideouts. We've also got a lot of other good players stepping up and working hard in the weight room."
The talented 2012 prospect says he's focused on what he hopes to accomplish next season with his teammates at Greenwood.
"I've been starting for 4 straight years so I'm trying to win a state title this year with my team and my goals are to have a great season, every chance I have to make a play I'm going to do it, and every time I touch the ball my goal is to score. That's why I'm working so hard during the offseason."
Goodman says he plans to attend Alabama's Junior Day on February 19th. He was supposed to make it down to Baton Rouge to check out LSU's Junior Day on February 5th but was unable to make it there.
There are a large number of schools in the mix right now for Goodman in terms of recruiting but he's still awaiting his first offer. He talked about some schools that have amped up their interest in him as of late and where things stand for him currently.
"Right now I really don't have a list. I'm getting a lot of interest but I don't have any offers yet so I'm just going to work hard and let that take care of itself. Georgia, North Carolina State, and Alabama have been coming after me pretty good. Out of those I'd say Georgia and North Carolina State are recruiting me the hardest though."
All three aforementioned programs have been by Greenwood High recently to check in on Goodman and we asked him if he were to get an offer that really stands out to him is there a chance he could commit early?
"I really haven't thought about it. Mainly it will depend on who offers me and when. If I feel like I'm ready to make a decision it may be in the summer time."
