As one of the top prospects in the 2012 class here in South Carolina, Hanahan WR Chris Brown has seen his recruitment pick up immensely over the past few months. The 6'3 175 pounder has been on a roll as his highlight tape is starting to circulate and he has secured his first offer from Cincinnati. Two weekends ago he was in Gainesville Florida to check out the Gators for their Junior Day activities and then he drove down to Miami to compete in the Under Armour combine there on Sunday. He talks about it all with SCPrepNation.com.
"My trip to Florida was good. I had a lot of fun and got to talk to a lot of coaches while I was there," Brown told SCPrepNation.com.
"I got a chance to see the weight room, the locker room, and the stadium while I was there. You could just feel the energy they have about their football there. Even inside the stadium you could look up and feel the energy."
"Me and Gimel talked a bit about schools and trips we are going to take. I also told him about the Under Armour combine too."
One Gator coach in particular made it a point to talk with Brown and gave him some feedback.
"I talked a lot with Aubrey Hill, the receivers coach. He told me that he's seen my film and he really liked what he saw. He said to keep it up because I will be hearing from them."
After checking out Gainesville Brown then made the ride down to Miami to compete in the Under Armour combine there on Sunday. Being that Florida is a state known for the speed at the skill positions did Brown have any anxiety about competing against some of South Florida's best?
"Haha! No, it kind of just motivated me. I thought I was pretty fast so I wanted to go out and make them prove they were faster you know. It was a good experience though. It showed me where I was at amongst the best down there."
Brown says he felt he shined especially in the 40 yard dash, vertical leap, and broad jump testing events. He ran a 4.44 second laser timed 40 which was the 3rd best at the event. He also posted combine overall bests with a vertical of 33 1/2 inches and a 10'2" broad jump. His testing numbers earned him the title of #1 wide receiver at the event and #4 overall rank regardless of position. Brown says that he can best those marks with more training and work on technique this offseason.
"Oh definitely, I've been hitting the weights hard. I'm almost at 405 pounds now so I figure if I get stronger then I'll get faster. Yesterday I asked my track coach to time me and I ran a 4.40 and 4.42 in the 40."
One of the events was relatively new to Brown except for a quick practice session the Friday before the combine he says.
"The L-cone drill was my first time I've done it. I practiced the Friday before the event so it's still new to me."
He posted a very strong 7.06 seconds in the event.
Brown says that his coach has sent film to pretty much all of the ACC and SEC schools and that his recruitment has been hearing from new schools almost on a daily basis as his film continues to circulate. One of the latest schools to contact him was Auburn as they informed him that they will be by in the spring to check him out during practice.
So far the 2012 wideout says he's established some pretty good relationships with a few college coaches early on.
"I talk a good bit with coach Steve Spurrier Jr. at South Carolina, coach Jim Bridge from NC State, and I keep up with coach Weist from Cincinnati a good bit too."
On Saturday Brown made a trip to Columbia to participate in the photo shoot for Tom Lemming and then took in South Carolina for their Junior Day activities.
One of his highlights was being able to check out the facilities and taking photos in a Gamecock uniform. He took photos with Spurrier Jr. and good friend 2013 WR Tramel Terry of Goose Creek High School.
"Before I left he said he'll be talking to me real soon, and after that he said he needed three more receivers for this year with a wink. Overall we had a good time. We had a good laugh in the highlight room with my little brother Tramel Terry where Alshon Jeffrey caught a screen pass. Coach Spurrier Jr. said, "I saw how they couldn't stop you with that play in your film.""
Brown says it was a good day overall for him while in Columbia as Spurrier Jr. was able to meet with his mother as well.
