CB Tyrell Pearson Enjoying JUCO Success

Former Greenville High CB Tyrell Pearson emerged late on the radar as one of the state's leaders in interceptions his senior season with 10 picks. Schools came late but Pearson now finds himself more than halfway across the country at Mesa Community College in Arizona. Come inside for an update with Pearson about what schools are in the mix as he already hods an offer.

Tyrell Pearson Profile

Pursuing his dream former Greenville High CB Tyrell Pearson is nearly 2,000 miles away from home now in Mesa Arizona at Mesa Community College. The 5'9 165 pound cornerback was the state leader with 10 interceptions his senior season prior to heading out to Arizona. SCPrepNation.com caught up with Pearson recently as he's starting to hear from a number of schools and landed his first offer.

Making the move from high school to JUCO was a transition for Pearson and he talked about the biggest difference in the game between those two levels.

"In high school I could get away with a lot but JUCO it's a lot faster and you have to be on your game day in and day out." Pearson said.

One thing that puzzled me was just exactly how he ended up almost all the way across the country in Arizona.

"To be honest it was a last minute thing. I wake up everyday asking myself the same thing. I'm thankful for the opportunity though."

Being one of the state's top corners in the 2010 class Pearson says his skill set has improved a great deal playing for Mesa CC.

"I think my technique, back pedal, and the way I come out of my breaks would be a couple of things I've most improved on since high school since I got here. I still need work on the little things to be the best cornerback I can be."

Mesa endured a tough season ending with a 1-9 record. The experience though was beneficial for Pearson as he steadily hones his craft at corner.

"I had 38 tackles, 9 pass break ups, 3 interceptions, 1 returned for a 98 yard touchdown, 1 sack, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown."

The big play skills are obviously still there as the ballhawk enjoyed a solid first season. That play has a couple of colleges showing early interest and has already earned him a scholarship offer. He talked about that offer and some visits he's made already.

"I have an offer from Prairie View A&M and I'm also hearing from Arizona and Colorado State. I know Prairie View A&M is a historically black university and that they play in the SWAC conference. I visited Arizona when they played Arizona State. It was a great place, a great atmosphere to play in, and it was just a great place overall. I loved it!"

Although he's enjoyed his time in Arizona Pearson says he wouldn't object to hearing from schools closer to his home in Greenville.

"It'd be nice to hear from schools like South Carolina, North Carolina, and East Carolina."

Pearson also shared with us what he'll value the most when considering his college options.

"Education would be the most important thing for me. Everything else like early playing would be on me through my hard work in the weight room and film room. That and how well I grasp things on the practice fields will determine if I get to play or not."

Pearson says he is scheduled to graduate from Mesa CC in May of 2012 and that he'll have two years of eligibility remaining. From there he says he'd like to major in Sports Marketing and try to earn a chance to play in the NFL.

He offered up some advice to young prospects still in high school.

"I'd tell young guys who are freshmen and sophomores, really anybody to stay in your books and to just stay humble."

SCPrepNation.com will have more updates with Tyrell Pearson as more schools start to show interest. We'll also have his freshman video highlights from Mesa Community College too so stay tuned.
