Things had been relatively quiet on the recruiting front for 2012 Hillcrest WR David Hopkins last season. After leading the team in receptions and receiving yards though things have changed. We caught up with Hopkins recently and he discussed where things stand currently and what he's hoping to achieve moving forward towards his senior season.
As stated before Hopkins was the Rams' top receiver with 28 catches for 313 yards, 11.18 yards per catch, and 2 touchdowns. One game where Hopkins shined brightest he says was his breakout performance. He also talked about the opponent who provided his toughest matchup last year.
"My best game was against Woodmont. I had 7 catches for at least 125 yards. As far as toughest matchup goes, I play slot so I don't see many cornerbacks. Mostly just linebackers and safeties. I'd have to say the safety from J.L. Mann, Pat Martin, who is headed to Tennessee."
Hopkins says his strengths currently lie in his route running and hands.
"I catch everything that comes my way."
He also talked about what aspects of his game he's been trying to improve the most this off season.
"I've been getting bigger. I've put on some weight so I'm getting stronger and faster."
Hopkins reports maxes of 230 pounds on the bench press, 400 pounds on squat, 215 pounds on power clean, a 4.52 second 40 yard dash, a 4.34 second pro shuttle time, and a 29 inch vertical.
Looking ahead to next season the 2012 prospect has some goals set for his squad already.
"Our team goals are to compete with the Upstate's powerhouses. My personal goal is to be the top wide receiver in the area."
A few games in particular will carry extra meaning for Hopkins next season. And to no surprise one of those games is against the Rams' biggest rivals.
"I'm looking forward to playing Mauldin because they beat us twice last season. It left a sour taste in my mouth being our rivals. I'm also looking forward to playing Byrnes because they embarassed us and I can't wait to return the favor."
As of now Hopkins says he hasn't visited any colleges but a few have been by this spring to check in with him.
"The Citadel and Hampton University have been by to see me so far this spring."
The 2012 prospect says he'll keep a hectic schedule when it comes to the camp circuit.
"We are going to a lot of team camps this summer. I'm not really sure because I haven't seen the list yet but I know it's a lot. I am going to the Under Armour 360 camp too."
When it comes time to check out potential colleges the Hillcrest prospect says he'll consider atmosphere, coaching staff, and education the most.
"Because you need to be a student before an athlete."
