Stock Rising: May 2011 Edition

There are always players who "fly under the radar" every recruiting cycle. Well inside we'll take a look at 5 prospects who we feel have done so for far too long and are definitely on the rise like Ridgeland's Wesley Scott (pictured). So we bring you a new series here on, "Stock Rising" and inside check out 5 guys who are on the rise in our opinion.

Over the course of the past year we've introduced a great number of prospects to the recruiting world. Some of our top projections during that time have gone from 0 stars to 3 stars in a matter of months and more importantly gone from 0 offers to multiple offers. Some of those prospects we've introduced lately are OL Jonathan McLaughlin of Mauldin High and WR Chris Brown of Hanahan High. Who are some of the most unsung prospects in the state right now? Check out the May Edition of our "Stock Rising" series.

OL/DT Caleb Smith
Woodruff HS
6'4 280 lbs.
Smith already holds one offer from in-state Newberry. Expect that to change soon once the word gets out about him. Smith possesses a great blend of size, strength, and speed. So much so that it's hard to project where he will play in college because he's got tremendous potential at various positions on both sides of the ball. Smith has posted an amazing 4.53 second pro shuttle time at a recent NUC event showcasing his agility and explosiveness, he also bench pressed 185 pounds 30 reps. Reminds me of former Aynor High and current South Carolina center T.J. Johnson with his build and tenacity. Smith in fact is better than Johnson was at this stage of his career in my opinion. Johnson recently was named to the Rimington Watch List for 2011. Smith says South Carolina is his dream school, so keep an eye out on that growing relationship.
QB Caleb Rowe
Blue Ridge HS
6'3 205 lbs.
Rowe has been on our radar for the past 2 seasons and last season was a big coming out party for the 2012 signal caller. Rowe has good size and has put up huge numbers last season with 2689 yards and 27 touchdowns. Throws with good velocity and accuracy. Rowe is very efficient as he rarely turns the ball over with just 4 interceptions compared to 27 touchdowns. Rowe also has good mobility to move the pocket and escape harm's way if needed. Currently he gets our vote as the top signal caller in the state for 2012 edging out Reese Hannon from Greer High.
WR Bryton Griffin
Blue Ridge HS
6'3 185 lbs.
Griffin is Rowe's favorite target and for good reason. Bryton has good size and uses his advantage very well against most smaller defensive backs. The trait we like most about Griffin is his ability to run after the catch. As a junior last season he had over 1,200 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. Griffin has BCS talent and offers should be coming his way if he tests and performs well on the camp and combine circuit.
DE Wesley Scott
Ridgeland HS
6'3 240 lbs.
Scott wowed us at the Badger Sport South Showcase in Bamberg. Schools are starting to move on him now but it's always nice to see a prospect have a strong showing and witness his recruitment start to take flight. Scott turned in a strong 4.79 second 40 time and showed great agility for his size with a 4.48 second shuttle time. Miami (OH) has already moved in with an offer and don't be surprised to see a lot more offers come his way if he continues to show well at camps this summer.
CB Devontre Parnell
Fairfield Central HS
5'11 175 lbs.
Given a chance to pick today I'd pick Parnell as my #1 cornerback in the state for 2012. There are guys rated higher than him but he's gone out and hit the camp and combine circuit hard thus far while others have not. Parnell is making believers out of some of the southeast's best wideouts as we've talked with some of the best wide receivers around and they all say he's the real deal. Parnell doubles as a dangerous return man as well which is giving his stock a boost as well. Devontre has very good closing speed, agility, instincts, and tackling ability. Already has some nice offers but don't be surprised to see some more high major programs offer with a continued strong off season showing and strong start during his senior season.
