After impressing the coaches at South Carolina in a big way 2012 Abbeville running back Ashton Heard camped over the weekend at another in-state school, Coastal Carolina. Heard who is one of the state's most gifted athletes turned up the heat for the Chanticleer coaching staff while at camp.
"I won the running back MVP award at Coastal Carolina," Heard told us.
Heard was very impressive at South Carolina a few weeks ago receiving heavy praise from multiple members of the Gamecocks coaching staff. They felt his 5'8 height may have been keeping him from getting offers to this point but they were blown away by his skills on the field and are still actively recruiting him.
The Chanticleers apparently got a heavy dose of Ashton's athletic abilities during his camp stay there too.
"I ran a 4.42 second forty yard dash there. I also had a 4.14 second pro shuttle time."
Having won the running back MVP award Heard says the Chanticleers envision him at another position.
"They said they won't sign a running back in this class but that they would love to use me at slot receiver because I can catch the ball and make something happen."
Last year as a junior Heard rushed for over 1800 yards and 27 touchdowns while helping Abbeville win the 1A state championship. Heard is one of the strongest prospects in the state pound for pound with maximums of 345 pounds on the bench press, a 405 pound squat, a 265 pound power clean, and a 535 pound deadlift.
Heard says he has an unofficial visit planned with Wofford later this month on the 30th. North Carolina A&T is a new school that has emerged as of late too.
