The days are counting down until the start of the high school football season here in South Carolina. Teams have been busy with off season preparations like camps and seven on seven tournaments in order to help tweak things heading down the stretch. One prospect who has seen his stock rise tremendously over the past few months if 2012 defensive end Josh Brown of South Aiken High School. A towering prospect at 6'5 273 pounds college coaches are taking a long hard look at him. With three offers already to his name we caught up with Brown as he's the latest player to be featured in our "UP NEXT" series.
This off season Brown has been hard at work in an effort to improve his stock. That work has seen him travel quite a bit to camp with various colleges this summer.
Last year Brown accumulated 21 tackles, caused 4 fumbles, and had 2 sacks. Brown says he's improved by leaps and bounds compared to last season and he's ready to up those numbers in a big way this year.
"I'm going to be everywhere and make plays for my team. I want to help show our state that South Aiken's defense is back and strong. I'm looking forward to playing Strom Thurmond and North Augusta this year. I promised myself that I would give their teams hell when I step on the field this year."
Some of the focus of his work this off season Brown says has been on a couple of facets of his game.
"I've really been working on my arms and legs. It is really important that I can run to change direction whenever a running back tries to juke left or right. So that's something I've been working a lot on."
The 2012 prospect says right now that he feels his upper body strength and speed are two of his biggest attributes on the field.
"Because they say speed kills."
Brown when asked if he patterned his game after any particular players had a surprising pair of players in response.
"Daquan Bowers and Deacon Jones because they both love the game and even though it gets hard at times they didn't give up on their dream."
So far Brown has picked up offers from VMI, Georgia State, and Presbyterian. His list of suitors includes plenty of others including some high major programs.
"I'm hearing from Clemson, Kentucky, Marshall, NC State, and Georgia Tech. Clemson is recruiting me the hardest right now."
Getting a quality education and the atmosphere a school has will play a vital role in his decision Brown told us.
Before closing our interview we asked Brown to tell us something that most people would be surprised to know about him and the humble youngster had this to say.
"Most people would be surprised to know that I'm a nice person and love the game of football. At the end of the day I'm blessed because when I was young I never would have thought this could happen to me. I'm so blessed and I thank God, my coaches, and the people who told me I was a good player and that I would make it. It's time to show them that I am better than good and see where it takes me."
SCPrepNation.com will continue to follow Josh Brown this season as schools keep a close eye on this fast rising prospect from South Aiken.
