The mail continues to pile up for 2012 Keenan High safety/wide receiver Tyler Smith. Last year as a junior Smith put together a solid season and he hit the camp circuit this summer to showcase his talents. SCPrepNation.com caught up with Smith to talk about his recruitment and plans for his upcoming senior season.
Last year Smith made 76 solo tackles, 31 assists, 7 pass break ups, and 2 interceptions for the Keenan defense. He's hoping after that showing and some stops at various college camps this off season will keep more mail and visiting coaches headed his direction.
This off season was all about taking his game to the next level and he says he tried to put extra effort into getting stronger, field awareness, and becoming more flexible.
Smith has the confidence college coaches love in their safeties too.
"My biggest strengths are my speed, I'm a good open field tackler, and being able to cover in a zone and by myself."
Smith says he's hearing from all of the schools above that he camped with but also from Charlotte, South Carolina State, and The Citadel as well. He says that everyone is showing him the same amount of interest right now but he's hoping to turn up the heat on them with his play during his senior season.
"This year I want to have not only an undefeated regular season but to win all of our games in the postseason too. I have a lot of goals for myself personally this season. I want to graduate from high school, get invited to at least one all-star game, be named to all-region and all-area teams, earn scholarships from any colleges, and to be named the 2A defensive player of the year."
Looking ahead to college Smith has a strong sense of what he'll be wanting out of his next destination.
"Whether or not the school has my preferred major, how high is the graduation rate, and where they among other schools, the level of competition I would face on the playing field, whether or not I fit into the playing scheme, and how well do I fit into the atmosphere of the coaching staff, and around the school."
Smith says he's open to every school out there currently and carries a 3.4 GPA in the classroom.
SCPrepNation.com will have junior season film of Smith this week and more updates with him as the season progresses so stay tuned.
