The 2013 class here in South Carolina continues to strengthen with each passing day. One of our latest finds is White Knoll tight end/defensive end Alex Brown. From the "eye test" standpoint he fits the bill checking in at 6'3 1/2 231 pounds. The junior standout brings a really physical presence to the field that many coaches will love, in fact, many have already started inquiring about Brown. We caught up with Brown recently as he's "UP NEXT" with SCPrepNation.com!
Brown told us that he's a two-way starter for White Knoll at tight end and defensive end. The junior prospect made no bones about where he thinks he enjoys playing the most.
"I feel that I'll be a better tight end. But I've got another year to grow and get stronger. I'll play wherever a college coach wants me to play."
Where does that certainty come from?
"I love to blow people up and pancake the man in front of me."
Talking about his best game from his junior season thus far and you can see why we're high on this physical tight end.
"The best game I've had this year was against Orangeburg-Wilkinson last week. I had 6 tackles and a sack. I really think I had a better night on offense though. They didn't throw the ball to me. We only threw it one time the entire night but I had like 10 pancakes."
"My strongest attribute is my blocking for the run. I love playing smash mouth football."
There are some areas Brown says he'll key on this off season in order to be more well rounded though.
"Defensively, getting off the ball quicker and disrupting the play. Offensively I would like to smooth up my route running. We don't throw the ball much at White Knoll but I need to be more prepared for the next level."
Speaking of the next level, Brown has already started hearing from a number of schools. He's also been hitting the road taking some visits to see what they have to offer as well.
"I am going to UNC on October 29th, USNA on November 5th, Citadel on November 12th, Wake Forest on November 19th, NC State November 29th, and USF on December 1st."
Still getting used to the recruiting process Brown says he has no early favorites but is taking in as much information as he can about each school.
Academically Brown is a standout in that arena as well. The big physical tight end is heavy in the books as well.
"I am a student first. If the school is looking for a big dumb jock, I'm not their guy. I have a 4.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale. I would like to stay on the east coast though. I would also like to play for a school that utilizes the tight end."
With that being said Brown says he's hoping to hear from more schools on the east coast in the near future so he can continue to do his due diligence in regards to evaluating colleges.
SCPrepNation.com will continue to track the recruitment of Alex Brown moving forward as he's hoping a strong off season on the camp and combine circuit will turn some of that interest into early offers.
