West Ashley High School wide reciever Derrick Kinloch has just started to see his recruitment take flight. One in-school program has already invited the 2013 prospect to their Elite Camp to see more of him in person. The 6'2 175 pound prospect sat down with SCPrepNation.com this week to talk about the start of his recruitment and more.
With outstanding size and speed schools will start taking a closer look at Kinloch. The West Ashley standout says he's run a personal best of 4.58 seconds in the 40 yard dash and he backs that up as he was named Charleston County's Male Athlete of The Year for track and field recently.
Looking back on his junior season on the field one game in particular stands out in his memory. Not simply because of an outstanding personal performance but for the significant history that he and his team were able to accomplish in a victory.
"My most memorable game was when we played Summerville this year. We didn't throw the ball much but I had many key blocks and made an open field tackle after our quarterback threw an interception which brought me back to my free safety days (laughs). But it was our first time in school history beating Summerville and legendary coach John McKissick. It was maybe one of the most intense games ever!"
Currently Kinloch says that his speed, height, and awareness are the areas where he shines the most.
"This off season I will work hard on my route running, hands, and size by working hard in the weight room."
Speaking of Summerville High School, it was the home of the player that Kinloch says he idolized coming up. So much that he patterns his game and style after him as well as studying a couple of current in-state college wide receiver standouts.
"I idolized A.J. Green since his high school days. I watch his highlights all the time! I'm talking high school highlights to his NFL highlights)! I also study Sammy Watkins and Charone Peake from Clemson."
Summerville also hosts an opponent Kinloch says gave him the most challenging battle of his season in a Shrine Bowl cornerback.
"Matt White the cornerback from Summerville was the toughest guy I faced all year because of the way he would shoot in. He made it hard for me to line up and get to his inside. They were really physical."
Kinloch's play on the field has earned some early looks from a couple of schools and he talked about the programs he's heard from and one school that he'll be camping with.
"I was invited to Furman's Senior Camp through Coach Norval after viewing my highlight reel. I also received an invite to Princeton as well. I am going to Furman's Elite Camp."
With strong academic programs like Furman and Princeton showing interest Kinloch has solid grades in the classroom reporting a 3.2 GPA and says he'll be taking the SAT in May. The ability to receive a great degree along with other factors will be major in his decision making process come Signing Day 2013.
"Education, conference strength, atmosphere, coaching staff, facilities, and playing time are going to be the biggest factors for me when looking at colleges."
