With 2 offers already in hand the freshman Bryant is a hot commodity!

Kelly Bryant Profile

Freshman rarely play much less start on the varsity level. That wasn't the case with 2015 quarterback Kelly Bryant of Abbeville High School. The Panthers won the 1A state championship two years ago and this year coach Jamie Nickles put the freshman at the controls as he helped guide them to a repeat as state champions. We caught up with the freshman quarterback to talk about his season and recruitment.

Asked to talk about his experience of winning a state title as a freshman quarterback Bryant had this to say.

"It was a feeling that I can't describe. Not everybody gets the chance to win a state championship and make history as we did as back to back champions. It was exciting and a blessing to be with my teammates."

The Panthers have long been a run heavy team under the leadership of coach Nickles but when given an opportunity Bryant showed he was able to throw the ball. He told us about his stats from his freshman season.

"I passed for 397 yards and 3 touchdowns. I rushed for 669 yards and 9 touchdowns."

Looking ahead to next season Bryant talked about what he's looking to accomplish with his team and on a personal level. He also mentioned the areas of his game that he's wanting to improve upon the most.

"My goals for this coming season are for us as a team to build off of last season and to continue where we left off."

"My personal goals would be to continue to get better whether its on or off the field each and everyday."

There's always things that I can work on. I feel I need to work on my throwing motion and my footwork."

Not long after leading the Panthers to another state title the 2015 prospect got the news every high school athlete longs for, that first offer. The South Carolina Gamecocks were the first team to offer him but Clemson wasn't too far behind with their offer.

"I was very surprised about my first offer coming from a program like South Carolina and also it being an in-state school. I was shocked and blessed at the same time."

Although the Gamecocks were the first to offer and Clemson has offered as well Bryant plans to leave things open for a while since he is only a freshman. Both schools are keeping close tabs on him and want to continue to develop their chemistry with him.

"It's pretty special, it being my first offers, but I would say right now there's no leader. I'm just keeping my choices open."

"They've told me how much they like me and wanting me to come to camp this summer. Also keeping in contact so we can build a relationship."

The Tigers and Gamecocks have already offered and other schools have started to let it be known that their interested as well he says.

"I've gotten information packages from Auburn, LSU, North Carolina, and Alabama."

The in-state schools though are the only ones he's had direct contact with thus far. He does however plan on camping with both schools and one of the other schools that has shown early interest he says.

"I will be going to the Clemson, South Carolina, and Alabama camps."

Right now the freshman reports a bench press of 205 pounds and a 4.7 second 40 yard dash time.
