In a day and age where offensive schemes are favoring the ultra tall wide recievers in the 6'3 and upwards range it has put most cornerbacks at a distinct disadvantage. Things are changing in order to combat that now as well. Enter 2014 cornerback Lemarcus Martin of Greenville High School. Martin checks in at 6'1 160 pounds and he's still growing. He played well as a sophomore last year for the Red Raiders and he's hoping to turn in a big junior season so that college coaches will start to pursue him in the near future.
Last season as a sophomore Martin saw some pretty tough competition and he talked about it all with SCPrepNation.com.
"The toughest player I faced last season was Quinshad Davis from Gaffney. He was pretty explosive, had good size, and was fast off of the line."
The 2014 prospect says he enjoyed his best game of the season against another quality wide receiver who's high on college coaches' recruiting boards.
"My best game last season was against Woodruff. I had 3 knockdowns, 6 tackles, and forced 2 incomplete passes. I played against Blake Bone a lot in that game."
Martin talked about what he feels his biggest strengths are currently on the field.
"My biggest strength is that I go hard every play. Whether it's blocking , defending the pass, or stopping the run or pass. Also I feel like since I know things can happen I stay humble and play ever down like its my last!"
He says that he's working on improving his ball awareness a great deal this off season and early during practice and scrimmages with his team.
"I feel like if I was to turn my head around faster I would come down with more interceptions."
Martin says the goals for his Red Raiders are to do their best to shut out teams and to try and win the AAA state championship.
"I'd like to average at least 8 tackles, 2 knockdowns , and an interception every game. I'd also like to contribute on offense at wide receiver with a lot of receptions and touchdowns."
Right now Martin projects as a cornerback and he's got the physical attributes that say he could be a very good one as his body continues to grow and mature. He reports a 4.52 second 40 yard dash and 4.09 second pro shuttle time.
Asked if he had a preference as to where he plays on the next level Martin says he'll play anywhere that college coaches want him at as long as he's on the field.
With the season almost set to begin there should be no surprise that a bitter rival is the game he's most looking forward to.
"The game I'm looking forward to is Greer, because they are our rivals and I'm looking to put up big numbers!"
SCPrepNation.com will have more updates with Lemarcus Martin as he embarks on his junior season. For now check out some numbers concerning his progress in the weight room and a closer look at his personal
