Playing on the AAU circuit with the Celtics South organization this past season 2014 shooting guard Alexander Powell of St. Joseph's High School enjoyed a lot of success. The Celtics South program would go on to place 2nd in the state in the 16U AAU state finals. They would go on to place 7th in the YBOA Nationals. The 6'3 165 pound prospect is hoping to continue that success into his regular season with St. Joseph's and turn some early interest into plenty more.
Make no mistake about it, Powell knows where his bread and butter is currently on the basketball court.
"My strengths are my shooting (both volume and range), my on and off the ball defensive skills, and my basketball IQ."
He also talked about other facets of his game that he's trying to vastly improve upon heading into his junior season at the Greenville County school.
"I'm working on improving my strength and my ball handling skills. I am also attempting to work on being able to close out close games."
Right now Powell understands that while he is a shooting guard on the high school level that he'll need to work on his lead guard skills to help make himself more versatile as a possible combo guard prospect to college coaches.
So far his abilities have allowed him to hear from one school, Randolph College (Va.).
He's hoping that a stronger showing during his junior season will open more eyes of college coaches after St. Joseph's went 11-12 last year.
"My goals are to be all-region and in the running for region player of the year. I want to lead our team to the Bi-Lo Center's upper state finals and establish myself as one of the premier players in the state."
Powell has been around the block and won a couple of awards he shared with us.
"I received the "Commissioner's Award" at the 2011 Phil Martelli basketball camp at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I'm also a "Point Guard College" graduate, during this year at Emory University."
Last year Powell says a strong showing against rivals Greenville Tech provided his most shining moment of his sophomore year.
"My most memorable game was against Greenville Tech in which we won 52-43. I shot 5-10 with 15 points. I shut down their best player and set the tone on defense as well as offense. We played a very physical game on a loud Friday night."
Powell says he'll venture out this year to visit more schools to see what each program and school has to offer. He also talked about what he'll be looking at closely when choosing a college.
"The main factors in choosing a school for me will be education. It must be challenging. Also a good coaching staff as well as the overall school atmosphere is important."
SCPrepNation.com will keep tabs on Powell as he's hoping to continue his winning ways from the AAU season into his regular season with St. Joseph's. Stay tuned!
