For 2013 safety/cornerback prospect Will Griffin he's giving his all during his senior season. Last week they faced back to back 1A state champions Abbeville and came up short after surging out to a 21-7 lead at halftime. Griffin and his teammates are planning to use the loss as a learning experience and move forward with a successful season. We caught up with Griffin as he contributed in a big way for the Red Raiders despite the loss.
"I had an interception and made a lot of tackles, probably six or so," Griffin said.
This off season Griffin says he worked hard on attacking the ball and being a more sure tackler.
Last season Griffin had 13 solo tackles, 33 assists, 1 interception, and 9 pass break ups. Looking back last season Griffin says he had his best game against arguably the best team they faced, Woodruff High School.
"It was the Woodruff game,I had my first interception that game. I had 4 solos and a couple of assists. We played against a running back (Shun Tribble) that went to Georgia Southern and Blake Bone a wide receiver with a couple of big offers already."
Griffin says his ability to read and recognize plays are one of his biggest strengths on the field right now.
"I feel as though I know what passes are coming and when they are coming so I can try to make plays on the ball."
His immediate goals are pretty plain and simple. He says he wants to help his team win a state championship and play his best in order to try and grab some scholarships so he can play football on the collegiate level.
So far a handful of FCS schools have expressed interest in Griffin and he shared those programs with us.
"I've heard from North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, Wittenburg, South Carolina State, and Stetson. I would really like to hear from Appalachian State soon. I like them a lot."
One of Greenville's bitter rivals, Greer High School, is a game that Griffin and his teammates all are looking forward to. He talked about why and one of their toughest players from last season too.
"I'm really looking forward to the Greer game because they are our rivals and they always come with great competition. Their running back Quez Nesbitt is always tough because he is so small and I really had to focus on my vision and he is fast."
