Easley High School has seen a great change in their football program over the past few years. One of their top prospects, 2013 linebacker Sam Houston, has been one of the mainstays during that upwards trend. Last year Houston put together a strong season for the Green Wave. Some regional schools are taking a look at Houston already and he has one offer on the table currently. We sat down with Houston to talk about the very latest.
Last year as a junior Sam Houston had a stellar campaign for the Green Wave. His stats are indicative of the ballhawking linebacker's talents. The coaching staff knows his importance to the team as well.
"I had 105 tackles, averaged 8.1 tackles per game, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 blocked punt, and 2 pass breakups last season. I was named the team's Defensive MVP last year."
Last year also saw Houston put together his best individual performance too he says.
"My best game from last year would be the Laurens game. I had 19 total tackles with 3 tackles for loss. It was a key win in region last year for us."
Last season also presented the Easley standout with his toughest individual challenge he says.
"Brandon Shell, the offensive lineman from Goose Creek High School (now at South Carolina), he was extremely physical and a good blocker."
Currently nearing the midseason point in his senior season Houston is once again putting up strong numbers in helping his Easley squad.
"We're 4-1 right now. I have 40 tackles, 2 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, and 1 sack so far."
Already having matched or surpassed some stats from his entire junior season Houston has worked hard to improve his game on the field. He talked about areas of his game that are his biggest strengths right now.
"My footwork, my ability to get to the ball, my instincts, and my ability to beat blocks are my biggest strengths."
Three schools have already started recruiting Houston so far and one has extended an offer.
"I'm hearing from The Citadel, North Greenville, and Carson Newman. I've got an offer from North Greenville."
Houston has visited two of those schools and we asked him to tell us what he likes most about each one.
"With The Citadel they have a good coaching staff and awesome facilities. At North Greenville they have a good coaching staff and good campus life."
The 2013 prospect in fact will take visits over the next two weekends. He'll take another game in at The Citadel this weekend and visit with Carson-Newman next weekend.
"I'll have to say coaching staff, atmosphere, style of play, and facilities are going to be the most important thing for me when choosing a school."
Now at the midpoint in the season we asked Houston what his goals were for the Green Wave and on a personal level from here on out.
"We want to win the region championship first and make a deep run in the playoffs. Personally I'd like to make either North-South or the Shrine Bowl and have at least 120 tackles."
Houston reports a 3.4 GPA and a 20 on the ACT. He says that he'd like to major in either sports management or business in college. Easley will next face T.L. Hanna on Friday.
We'll have more updates with Sam Houston as the season rolls on so keep it right here for more updates with the state's top prospects!
