Already having made his verbal commitment early on in the process 2013 Goose Creek defensive end/linebacker Gerald Turner has been primarily focusing on his senior season on the field. He's helped Goose Creek remain undefeated after winning the AAAA Division 2 state championship last season. He picked up another lofty achievement when he was named to this year's Shrine Bowl team and SCPrepNation.com sat down with him to talk about being named to the all-star game and more.
With it being the biggest all-star game in the Carolinas, the Shrine Bowl has always been the pinnacle for most prospects on the high school level before heading to college. Is it something that Turner has always dreamed of or thought about growing up though?
"Ever since I came to high school and I heard about it I always told myself that's a game that I wanted to play in my senior year. I was excited and thankful for being selected out of the hundreds of players in SC."
Even though it's an all-star event and most players take a laid back approach to the week's events and practices Turner says that won't be his approach.
"I'm really looking forward to working hard during practice and showing everyone what player I really am."
As we mentioned previously Turner has been a commit to South Carolina for quite some time. Does that mean that other suitors have stopped chasing the talented playmaker from Goose Creek though?
"I am very solid in my commitment so they have backed off. Some schools are just sending like letters and stuff to my school nothing serious."
Turner says he visited USC for their game against Georgia and he plans on making a couple more home games before season's end if all goes well.
Right now Turner's Goose Creek team sits at 8-0 on the season and he says he's got 7 sacks and 40+ tackles thus far on a loaded squad.
Again talking about the Shrine Bowl we asked Turner if there were any players he was really looking forward to locking up with or getting to know on a personal level.
"I haven't really looked at the whole list yet but I am looking forward to getting to know all of the players on the team."
Taking a workmanlike approach to the week of practice he talked about what he hopes to take from the high level of competition. He also shared with us some goals he'd like to accomplish in the game against North Carolina.
"I am very hyped because everyone always tells me wait to you get to the next level. I think this will be good competition for me to get me prepared for the next level. I'd like to have at least 10 tackles and 2 or 3 sacks."
Looking ahead to the college level Turner says he's preparing himself for the rigors that playing in the SEC will bring.
"Basically I've been working on improving the way I play the game. There isn't going be anyone just to push around because they are all going to be almost always bigger than me."
